Chingis Khan Equestrian is 54km out of Ulaanbaatur.
The weather is already damn cold with -20 C. Swine flu is on rise with over 800 cases and 6 dead. Since i have come to Mongolia–Sept 11–have been visiting different outskirts of UB on weekends. The other weekend i visited Chingis Khan Equestrian, located 54 km out of Ulanbaatur. Equestrian is derived from “eques” which means horse. So, Equestrian Statue means a person/statue on horse. Chingis Khan Equestrian is the largest statue in the world. While traveling out of UB, everywhere was covered with snow presenting a beautiful view. After an hour of drive,we reached the Metal Statue of the Great Khan. Local people also call it the Metal Statue. With the white silver color of the statue and everhwhere around it covered with snow, the view flashed the eyes.
The statue is 40 meter high on horseback standing on a base 10 meter high. The steel-made statue stands on 36 columns, referring the memorial of 36 kings from Chingis Khan to Ligden Khan. Inside the building–base–there is a restaurant, a souvenir shop and meeting rooms.
Before going to the elevator for climbing the neck of the horse, the guide took us to the conference room. Where an introductory video about the history and construction of the statue was played on a giant screen. Now we moved upstairs, visiting different rooms with historic wall paintings. Then we took the elevator to the neck of the horse, where we walked up to the head, right in front of the Great Khan’s stainless steel golden whip. It was a great view of the complex and surrounding from there.
